I updated to service pack 3, now no visual styles work. Wtf?

I just updated to service pack three in xp. I can't run any visual style besides windows clic, not even standard XP themes. the media center theme would be tolerable, but it says an exception occurred when I ran that and when I tried the basic XP skins it said "Windows has closed the program "Run DLL as app" for your protection. Then that program crashed and I had to click the close on for that too. Is this some new and dumb security feature in SP3? How can I fix this?
