Who was the real subject of Vermeer's "Girl with a Pearl Earring" painting?

Actually that movie, even though it was great, was pure fiction. There is no absolute record of who the sitter was but scholars think it could have been either Magdalena Pieter Van Ruijven, the daughter of Vermeer's biggest patron or maybe his own daughter Maria Vermeer.
