In Lois Lowry's novel, The Giver, what does Jonas want to do in the end because of he's against Sameness?

he runs away with the newchild, gabriel, because gabriel was going to be "released" the next day. They run away and the book ends with this weird part about them going down a hill on a sled a Jonas thinks he see's lights and a village and someone waiting for them there. It's pretty ambiguous because you don't really know what happens to them or what is outside of their world.
