Pet experts: Golden retriever and a cat?

Our cat is three years old and has "issues"... it was a stray and we give it lots of love and attention. Still she is very skittish. The kids want a golden retriever puppy. Is this a terrible idea? Do you think they will get along? Any advice/experience would be GREATLY appreciated.!!!! Thanks~!
