Can the US go bankrupt?

It's a simple question, with probably a difficult answer. the economic crisis is deepening, and the national debt is at 10 TRILLION, but how long can we keep spending and bailing out big companies? i am not an economist by any stretch of the imagination, but i am semi-concerned for the future of the nation if all this keeps up.
