My parakeets are gnawing on a rock.?

Yeah, today I found my two parakeets, Henry and Pam, chewing away at a rock I had set on the windowsill. Does this mean they are calcium deprived or something? I could get a cuttle bone for them. Or should I get them grit? I remember reading somewhere that parrots didn't need it...
