Questions about suicide by overdose?

i'm just wondering, not trying to commit suicide or anything, does taking a sleeping pill then overdosing on other drugs cause you to die in your sleep? or are the drugs really painful and make you wake up then die? and are sleeping pills today less potent so people won't die of overdose?
