How does your school handle National Honor Society?

At my school we apply for NHS in September or October of junior year, and are notified within a week or so if we've been accepted. We have a small ceremony for only the inductees and our families, and then we must complete 40 hours of community service before May of senior year in order for us to say we've been in NHS.
